“Broken Seeds” directed by Herb Kimble is a thrilling drama that glorifies the tribulations of Darnell, a young lad who aspires to fly to the far-off space as an astronaut but was rebuffed by the wicked world which greeted him on his way.

This 12-episode series which premiered in 2023 is a journey to the heart of resilience, dropping into the difficult choices one has to make when overwhelmed by challenges. The work of the director and co-creator of the series, Kimble, was successful in creating raw and very emotionally charged narration.

The motion picture opens with a comfortable enough image of Darnell in what might perhaps be called a middle-class type setting; however, comfort is not allowed to last long, as Demetrius is diagnosed with ALS, and the mounting medical expense leads to financial ruin. Darnell’s family moves to a very rough neighborhood, an environment that threatens to strip away hope and aspirations from the young boy’s heart. Herb Kimble‘s direction captures the inner turmoil that lies within Darnell, making the viewer feel the weight of his dreams slipping away. But Director Kimble knows well the art of coaxing the best from his actors, and he pointed to the commitment to the project that he saw in his cast: “This series is about human resilience; and the actors brought authenticity to the characters-the story. Indeed, Sallieu Sesay, Asia’h Epperson, and Chris Rouse add depth to the narrative.”

It would all lead down to very dramatic accounts of struggles that so many people were battling to overcome within their own situations. Really, episodes such as this are better suited to showing how the sufferings are meted out towards the family due to Demetrius’s sickness. His condition worsens and eventually ends in a jaw-dropping encounter with an audience who are left reeling throughout Kimble’s portrayal of a strained family.

As the series unfolds, Darnell’s choices continue being almost desperate, leading him into a very dangerous route.

At the end of the series, his transformation is complete when he becomes Shaka, a figure of power and authority in his new world. This transformation speaks to the skill with which Herb Kimble could write a narrative that would be engaging yet thought-provoking.
