Dan Reed Criticizes New Michael Jackson Film for Ignoring Abuse Allegations

Leaving Neverland director Dan Reed has slammed Lionsgate’s upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, calling it a romanticization of “a man who abused children.”

In a recent comment for The Observer, Reed covered a 2019 documentary about the late singer and spoke about the silence surrounding the new film.  

Reed’s documentary, Leaving Neverland, chronicled two men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, whom Jackson accused of sexually abusing him as a child. 

The movie attracted a lot of interest and controversy, with some Jackson fans arguing for his innocence while others demanded that his legacy be reexamined.

In the commentary, Reid claims the upcoming biopic will ignore allegations of abuse and send a dangerous message by portraying Jackson as a hero.  

“If a pedophile is rich and popular enough, society will forgive him,” Reed writes. “What the total absence of outrage accompanying the announcement of this movie tells us is that Jackson’s seduction is still a living force, operating from beyond the grave.”

Reid also criticized the press’s “deafening silence” over the film, saying no one had called for the film to be canceled. He believes this silence indicates that Jackson’s influence remained strong even after his death.  

“No one is talking about ‘cancelling’ this movie, which will glorify a man who raped children,” he said. 

Reed’s opinion piece highlights the ongoing discussion surrounding Jackson’s legacy and the effect that abuse allegations can have on a person’s reputation, even though the upcoming biopic has not received much press attention.

Reed Criticism

The film industry has a responsibility to carefully consider the messages it sends, and Reed’s comments serve as a reminder of the importance of taking allegations of abuse seriously.  

“It seems that the press, his fans and the vast older demographic who grew up loving Jackson are willing to set aside his unhealthy relationship with children and just go along with the music,” Reed added. 

“To them I say this: even if you do not believe a word of what his many accusers have said; even if you are not concerned by the police investigations and the massive payouts to halt legal proceedings, how do you explain the completely uncontested fact that for years Jackson spent innumerable nights alone in bed with young boys?”

He continued, “To the filmmakers, I say: How will you represent the moment when Jackson, a grown man in his 30s, takes a child by the hand and leads him into that bedroom? How will you depict what happens next? 

“By sidestepping the question of Jackson’s predilection for sleeping with young boys, you are broadcasting a message to millions of survivors of child sexual abuse. That message is: If a pedophile is rich and popular enough, society will forgive him.”

Ultimately, Reed’s op-ed is a powerful call to action, urging the public to question the glorification of a person accused of abuse and to hold those responsible accountable for the messages they send. 

It’s a reminder that the conversation surrounding Jackson’s legacy is far from over, and that the impact of abuse allegations should not be ignored or dismissed.

The Biopic by Lionsgate

Antoine Fuqua, director of “Emancipation” and “Training Day,” has been selected by Lionsgate to direct the Michael Jackson biopic, “Michael.” 

The film will focus on the life and music of the King of Pop, who rose to fame as a young child with the musical group Jackson 5 and later became a celebrated solo artist.

However, Jackson was also a controversial figure, with allegations of child sex abuse being made against him. In 2005, he was acquitted of charges related to the abuse allegations. The recent documentary “Finding Neverland” has brought the allegations back into the spotlight, with the Jackson estate denying the allegations and calling them “absolutely false.”

Lionsgate has stated that the film, made in partnership with John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of Jackson’s estate, will “explore all aspects of Michael’s life.” It remains to be seen how the film will address the allegations. Michael Jackson passed away in 2009 at the age of 50.

Lionsgate has not yet responded to a request for comment on the op-ed.

Lawsuit Against HBO

Previously, the Michael Jackson estate has won an appeal in a lawsuit against HBO over its documentary “Leaving Neverland.” The film, which aired in 2019, contained allegations of child sexual abuse against Jackson. 

The estate sued HBO for violating a non-disparagement clause in a 1992 contract between the network and Jackson, which the estate claimed the documentary violated.

In a unanimous decision, the appeals court ruled that the non-disparagement clause did not apply to the documentary because it was a matter of public concern. The court also noted that HBO had a First Amendment right to air the documentary.

The documentary, directed by Dan Reed, centered on two men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who claimed they were sexually abused by Jackson as children. The film received widespread attention and sparked controversy, with Jackson’s estate and supporters vehemently denying the allegations.

‘Thunderbolts’ Movie Adds Ayo Edebiri to Ensemble Cast of Marvel Villains

“We’re entering the room and to my absolute amazement — I have to stand up for this — to my absolute amazement, I swear to God, I take a deep breath and … I say to myself, ‘Pheromones.’ And then I’m talking to myself, I go, ‘You’re 90, for God’s sake, you’re 90.'”

“You’re alive!” Clarkson reminded her.

Ron Howard’s Vision for a ‘Backdraft’ TV Series

However, if Howard could choose which movie to adapt next, he’d pick 1991’s Backdraft.

In the movie Backdraft, Kurt Russell and William Baldwin play two firefighter brothers who are compelled to cooperate when a perilous arsonist visits Chicago. 

The movie is renowned for its tense and perilous fire sequences, which were recorded on camera while the movie was being filmed.

In a recent interview with EW, Howard said, “Backdraft would be really good. Backdraft would be fun. You could get the scope and the intensity that we had to do all in-camera — now we could do it efficiently and safely.”

The director believes Backdraft to TV will capture the intense firing sequence more efficiently and safely. Advances in technology make it possible to create realistic and spectacular fire scenes without endangering the actors or crew.

“We were kind of on the borderline there when you throw the safety question into what we were doing,” he stated. “I was so relieved when we wrapped. But now I believe we could tackle it and be just as ambitious visually and be a little safer.”

“We’re not actively working on it,” Howard adds. “Although Brian Grazer talks about it from time to time, so maybe one of these days.”

Legendary Composer John Williams Announces He Will Not Retire from Film Scores

Fans of John Williams, the celebrated composer behind some of history’s most famous film scores, can breathe a sigh of relief.

Despite having previously stated that he would stop writing film scores after Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was released, Williams has chosen to stay active in the field.

The 90-year-old composer, who has worked on scores for films such as Star Wars, Jaws, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, had said that The Fabelmans directed by Steven Spielberg and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would be his final two scores. 

But on Thursday night, at a special event marking his 50-year collaboration with Spielberg, Williams revealed he doesn’t actually plan to retire.

Fans of Williams’ music, who have grown to value his masterful compositions and their capacity to enhance the emotional impact of a film, will no doubt be delighted by this news.

Williams has won numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including five Academy Awards and seven BAFTA Awards.

It’s unclear what project Williams will work on next. But either way, fans can expect more of his iconic, haunting, and emotional scores to come out.With Williams’ talent, it’s unlikely any future films he makes will be hugely successful. There is no mistake.

Reason Behind Williams 

In a recent interview, Williams said his longtime partnership with director Steven Spielberg was a key reason for his decision to continue working.

“One thing Steven isn’t is a man you can say no to,” Williams quipped, drawing a laugh from the director, who added, “I just found out he’s not retiring.” 

Williams went on to explain how Spielberg’s father worked at the Shoah foundation until he was 101 or 102, and joked that he has “ten years to go” to match the director’s father’s output and enduring work ethic.

Iconic Composer

John Williams is a name synonymous with film music. The composer has been behind some of the most iconic and memorable scores in movie history, including Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, and Superman, to name just a few. 

With more than 50 years of experience in the film industry, Williams has become one of the most respected and celebrated composers of all time.

Born in New York City in 1932, Williams began his musical career as a jazz pianist before studying composition at the Juilliard School. 

He later landed a job as a pianist for the Columbia Pictures studio, where he began writing music for films. His first major film score was for the 1962 film “The Secret of Santa Vittoria”, but it was his work on the 1973 film “Jaws” that really put him on the map. 

The now-iconic theme of the shark has become one of the most recognizable pieces of music in the world, and Williams earned his first Academy Award nomination for his contribution on the film.

Honors

Over the next few decades, Williams continued to compose for some of the biggest films in Hollywood. 

His partnership with director Steven Spielberg, which began with “Jaws”, has resulted in some of the most memorable scores in movie history, including “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial”, “Jurassic Park”, and the “Indiana Jones” series. 

He also composed the music for all of the “Star Wars” films, from the original trilogy to the most recent films in the series.

Williams has been recognized for his work with numerous awards and accolades. He has been nominated for 52 Academy Awards, winning five, and has also been nominated for 48 Grammy Awards, winning seven. 

He also has received four Golden Globe Awards, and won four BAFTA Awards. He is also a Kennedy Center Honoree and a National Medal of Arts recipient. He is the third most Oscar-nominated person, after Walt Disney and Katharine Hepburn.

Spielberg Team Up

Williams has composed the scores for many of Spielberg’s films, beginning with their first collaboration on the 1975 film “Jaws”.

The two continued to work together on some of the most iconic films of all time, including “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial”, “Indiana Jones”, and the “Jurassic Park” series. ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Enters the New Year as Top 1 Film

James Cameron and his blue brotherhood wish everyone a very happy new year with Avatar: The Way of Water, which has dominated the box office for the third week in a row.

The sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time did well, earning an estimated $63.4 million over the weekend, taking a domestic total of $421.5 million, according to Comscore.

It is currently just $16 million away from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s now eight-week total of $437.9 million.

With a global cume of $957 million after generating an additional $186.7 million, The Way of Water became the second highest-grossing international release since the pandemic’s start and the biggest international release of 2022.

Last Monday, Cameron’s blockbuster hit the $1 billion mark worldwide, bringing its current gross to $1.38 billion.

Smash Hits

Universal’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish earned him $16.3 million in its second week of release, taking domestic sales to $60.7 million (his $129.5 million worldwide). 

Wakanda Forever, the third sequel in the top three movies at the box office, brought in an additional $4.8 million this weekend and $7.4 million internationally, bringing its global total to $818.4 million.

Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody, a musical biography, came in fourth place with $4.2 million and a domestic box office of $14.8 million. Internationally, it did a little better, earning $8.3 million, bringing its worldwide total to $27.9 million.

Damien Chazelle’s star-studded tribute to Old Hollywood, Babylon, which earned $2.7 million for a domestic haul of just $10.1 million, rounds out the year’s top five films.

Notably, no new films debuted in the top 10 at the box office this past weekend. However Tom Hanks’ A Man Called Otto debuted in four locations in New York and Los Angeles. 

The much-discussed dancing doll from hell horror movie M3GAN made $3.3 million in its overseas debuts in France, Mexico, and Belgium.

Way of Water Surpasses $1 Billion

A winter storm blew across the nation this Christmas, but Pandora was pleasantly warm and cozy.

In just two weeks, Avatar: The Way of Water has already raked in over $1 billion at international box offices. James Cameron’s expensive follow-up brought in an estimated $56 million during the holiday weekend, according to Comscore.

The Disney and 20th Century film’s worldwide gross as of Tuesday stood at $1.025 billion after grossing $317.1 million in North America and another $712.7 million abroad.

After Top Gun: Maverick ($1.49 billion), Way of Water is now the second-highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing Jurassic World Dominion. Nevertheless, it took Maverick a month to surpass the $1 billion mark and Jurassic World Dominion over four months.

Top 10

Things were noticeably cooler for several of the new Christmas releases this year. I Wanna Dance with Somebody, the Whitney Houston biography, earned an estimated $5.3 million, while Puss in Boots: The Last Wish came in second with an estimated $11.4 million.

The old Hollywood drama Babylon, directed by Damien Chazelle, only made $3.5 million over the holiday weekend. That’s a gloomy statistic, especially considering that Babylon had a broad release in over 3,300 theaters.

Babylon features a star-studded ensemble that includes actors like Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt. Still, the film has received poor reviews, earning a terrible C+ CinemaScore from viewers and a 54 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating.

According to Deadline, Babylon must generate $250 million worldwide for Paramount to break even after budget and marketing expenses; this is a figure that looks unlikely to be achieved.

Debuts and Successes

This past weekend, moviegoers traveled to Pandora, earning James Cameron the top spot at the box office.

According to Comscore, Avatar: The Way of Water made $134 million in its domestic debut and another $301 million elsewhere, for a total worldwide of $435 million.

The sci-fi epic comes in third place among pandemic debuts, after only Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($442 million) and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($600 million).

The first Avatar opened in 2009 and is still the most successful movie ever made. It opened with $77 million in the United States and Canada and held the top spot for seven weeks before rising to $760 million and $2.92 billion globally.

The film’s 3-hour and 12-minute running duration might put off repeat moviegoers, but it remains to be seen if the sequel will continue down that path.

“Equally important with length is pace — and the order of information and the engagement factor. As long as people are engaged, you’re good to go,” Cameron said. 

Cameron is certain that viewers will continue to be interested.

“I feel like we managed to jump through all those hoops,” he added. “People seem pretty engaged.”

Greta Gerwig Says ‘Barbie’ and ‘White Noise’ May Be a Good Combo

Filmmakers Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have spent the past three years working together on two seemingly disparate projects – White Noise and Barbie

In Baumbach’s White Noise, which debuted on Netflix on December 30, Gerwig and Adam Driver play a married couple whose town is in danger due to an airborne hazardous event.

Margot Robbie plays the title doll in Barbie, a film written by Baumbach and Gerwig and directed by Gerwig, which hits theaters July 21. Ryan Gosling as Ken.

Despite the two films’ very different sources of inspiration, Baumbach claims to feel a connection between them.

“I wrote White Noise, and then, once I had that in a place where I thought, okay, I’ve done a lot of the heavy lifting, Greta and I started work on Barbie,” Baumbach said. 

“So that was all sort of happening during that first year of the pandemic. They’re kind of connected in a funny. The execution is different, but there are aspects of the world of White Noise that actually informed some of how we looked at Barbie.”

“Everything got written in 2020. They very much feel like they came out of the same place in a way,” Gerwig said, adding context to Baumbach’s statement. 

“I mean, they physically came out of the same address. But I think it contributed, him working on that and us working on Barbie together.”

Would watching both films in a double feature be fun?

“I’m not going to pitch that,” Gerwig stated with a chuckle. “I’m sure if someone wanted to, it might be interesting. I don’t know. It could be strange. I can feel how they’re connected, but I don’t know if anyone else will see it.”

No Barbie Appearance

After all, Saoirse Ronan never visits the Barbie Dreamhouse.

The Oscar-nominated actress has revealed that scheduling issues prevented her from appearing in the upcoming Barbie movie, directed by Greta Gerwig, who is also the director of the movies Lady Bird and Little Women.

“I was supposed to do a cameo because I live in London, and they were [filming] there,” Ronan said in an interview with PEOPLE. “There was a whole character I was going to play — another Barbie. I was gutted I couldn’t do it.”

Ronan said she’s been in touch with Margot Robbie, who will portray the titular Mattel doll and Gerwig, but she still wants to make it work.

“I have texted Margot and Greta, and I’m like, ‘If you’re doing any pick-up [shots], maybe I can just walk through the background?'” Ronan stated.

Barbie and Ken

Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken, and the musician Dua Lipa were said to have joined the ensemble group earlier this year, according to rumors.

Barbie and Ken will also be portrayed by America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Hari Nef, Issa Rae, and Michael Cera. At the same time, Will Ferrell will play the CEO of a toy manufacturer.

The movie, which opens in theaters on July 21, 2023, also stars Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emma Mackey, Ana Cruz Kayne, Rhea Perlman, Ritu Arya, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Jamie Demetriou, Emerald Fennell, and Connor Swindells.

“The aesthetic of the movie is just so vibrant and full of life,” Liu revealed to EW earlier. 

“Imagine showing up to that set every day with a bunch of friends, like, ‘Great, cue the music!’ We’re dancing, and then you come out of a 12-hour day, and you’re like, ‘Did I really go to work today? Or did I just hang out with my friends?'”

The Shang-Chi actor continued, “I can’t wait to see it all come together and for the world to see. Because I know there’s a lot of question marks! Everyone’s like, ‘What is this Barbie movie?’ When people say ‘Barbie movie,’ they feel like they know what it’s going to be like. 

“But with every casting announcement and the announcement of Greta Gerwig, I think we’ve been raising a lot of eyebrows. But without giving away anything about the script, I’ll just say that it’s one of the best things I’ve ever read.”

Gerwig Movie First Look

Finally, a few images from Gerwig’s long-awaited Barbie movie match his blonde ambitions. Arriving in a pink convertible, Margot Robbie still looks glamorous but not plastic.

The first peek image and Barbie’s release date, July 21, 2023, were both tweeted by Pictures.

Initial thoughts? However, not every Barbie is an ’80s businesswoman making a crucial call, so the hair isn’t really giving “Barbie” as much as, well, “Margot Robbie hanging out.”

Furthermore, it’s too early to start choosing fault, yet I’m really hoping this movie includes a ’80s business Barbie.

Gerwig, who was directing Barbie and penned the screenplay with collaborator Noah Baumbach, will probably decide that.

Now, Gerwig and Baumbach, the creators of magnificent intellectual fare like Lady Bird and The Squid and the Whale, may not be the names you immediately identify with the most well-known fashion doll in the world and her extensive collection of accessories.

So, what may be expected? Robbie might drop Lady Bird out of that speeding convertible in a hot pink minute.

Ryan Gosling, who plays Barbie’s recurrently unemployed boyfriend Ken, will join Robbie, who also serves as a producer on the movie.

Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, and Kate McKinnon are all featured in the ensemble cast.

Actor Tom Koch Performing A New One-Character Immersive Play In Manhattan

Those looking to immerse themselves in a new theatrical experience this month will rejoice as Fire on the Moon, a New York-based production startup dedicated to helping musicians create quality promotional content and captivating performances, announced this last December the debut of the first installment of its new music-driven, walkthrough series entitled “Nighttime Stories: A Doomed Village”. 

A Doomed Village is a truly multidimensional experience that artfully combines all the best elements of live music, film and physical theater. The piece is directed by Nicolle Marquez and stars the leading man, and only live actor, Tom Koch. This series with the intention to inspire understanding and community through the medium of a darker, interpersonal narrative is coming to the Gene Frankel Theatre on January 14th. 

Koch, the 24 year old actor, originally from France, had his Off Broadway debut last April in the play Science written by the late Tom Attea. Since then Koch starred in several festival-bound dramatic feature and short films, namely the period film Terra Incognita, set right after the Sack of Baltimore in 1631, Koch played Irish a slave taken from his home by barbary pirates. He has also continued to find success onstage through leading and supporting roles in both Off-Broadway productions of Richard III and Port Chicago 50

Koch, who said in a recent interview, “I always wanted to mix film and theater, and working on A Doomed Village felt like exploring what this new medium could be”, will be challenged to lead the audience on an up close and personal walkthrough as they navigate a completely transformed Gene Frankel. The remarkable set consists of tight passageways and cramped quarters, limiting the audience both physically and thematically. Koch, who has experience with physical theater, movement-based pieces will shepherd the viewer along the linear storyline, all while interacting with holograms, projections, and short, filmed, vignettes. The twisted storyline takes place in a dark forest full of the unknown. The audience will find themselves in a bonafide cabin-in-the-woods where they will meet with Krem (played by Koch). A frightening isolated townsman with nothing left to lose, Krem is just one of the villagers of Mount Tumoe. As Krem assists the audience in the investigation of murder and corruption in the town, Koch will be using his expertise to transform into the multi-layered conflicted character. While his movement forward storytelling progresses expect a completely original score, composed by the talented Drew Storcks, accompanied by precision special effects designed by Reid Sullivan. 

It is sure to be a fresh and exciting production, unique in its composition and execution. James Gunn Speaks Out on ‘Superman’ Recasting Backlash

James Gunn and Peter Safran caused a stir with their audacious plans for DC Entertainment, prompting reactions ranging from roaring to unfriendly.

Last week, fans were surprised by the news that DC Studios may be moving forward with a Superman movie without Henry Cavill in the title role.

This new direction is being explored by producer and studio co-president Safran, who was only appointed to his position last October. So, could we be witnessing an alternate take on the “man of steel”?

On Monday, Gunn took to social media to address a strong wave of online criticism following the announcement of Cavill’s non-involvement, though he didn’t specify who the argument was.

“One of the things Peter & I were aware of when we took the job as heads of DC Studios was a certain minority of people online that could be, well, uproarious & unkind, to say the least,” he tweeted. 

“Our choices for the DCU are based upon what we believe is best for the story & best for the DC characters who have been around for nearly 85 years. These choices are great, perhaps not, but they are made with sincere hearts & integrity & always with the story in mind.

Gunn and Safran Won’t be Affected

He and Safran have faced worse odds in their careers than mere rants, but retaliation will never affect their behavior. The two individuals have taken a strong stand to stand up for what is right despite some opposition, vowing to remain resolute in doing so.

“We were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, & we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult & not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us,” he added.

“But this means little to us in comparison to our jobs as artists & custodians in helping to create a wide & wonderful future for DC.”

The upcoming Superman film, helmed by the director of Suicide Squad, won’t explore his inception. Instead, it will delve into a lesser-known chapter in Clark Kent’s life – requiring a new actor to take on the iconic role.

However, the filmmaker has expressed his admiration for Cavill, expressing a desire to collaborate with him on another future project. Unfortunately, the highly-anticipated Superman film is still shrouded in mystery – no further news has been released.

Cavill’s surprise departure stunned fans, particularly after his recent cameo appearance in Black Adam. His momentary presence stole the show, as only Superman could do when he met Dwayne Johnson’s dark antihero for a thrilling clash of wills.

Cavill sent a message to his devoted fans on Instagram: he was “back” as the much-beloved character and tantalizingly promised more information in the near future. 

Casting Role

In a monumental shakeup, DC Studios has recruited Gunn and Safran to helm their operations – the two will now serve as co-chairmen and CEOs of one of Hollywood’s most prestigious studios.

DC fans everywhere were enthralled when Gunn announced on Twitter that he was at work writing a new Superman movie. Plans are in the results to bring another actor into the iconic role.

Henry Cavill, who made his legendary transformation into Superman in the 2013 blockbuster Man of Steel and further cemented himself as DC’s caped hero with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, recently spoke out about plans to recast.

“The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck and the happiest of fortunes,” he said.

DC’s movie universe is buzzing with excitement as the appointment of Gunn, and Safran has sparked speculation about what their new leadership will mean for upcoming films. Fans eagerly anticipate how these two acclaimed directors could shape DC’s cinematic future. 

Gunn tweeted that he and Safran have “a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over the moon about.”
