Christian Bale Plays Detective in ‘The Pale Blue Eye’ with Edgar Allan Poe

The Pale Blue Eye

After his new film Amsterdam, Christian Bale is currently shrouded in yet another murder mystery. But now he works with Edgar Allan Poe.

Just in time for spooky season, EW has released the first footage of his upcoming film The Pale Blue Eye.

Bale plays a local detective investigating an 1830 murder at West Point Military College. His sidekick is none other than the budding author of “The Raven” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.”

Harry Melling, popularly known as Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter film series, plays Poe.

“Down, down, down came the hot thrashing flurry,” the writerly cadet (Melling) says at one point. “Darkest night, black with hell-charneled fury, leaving only that deathly pale blue eye.”

The film chronicles Bale’s Augustus Landor calling West Point after a cadet is found dead at dawn on a winter day. The killer deftly extracted the heart of the dead. However, the code of silence binding the recruits makes it harder to find any leads.

That’s why Augustus calls for Poe, a cadet with a knack for poetry.

Scott Cooper is the director of the thriller. Bale has previously worked with filmmaker on films such as Out of the Furnace and Hostiles.

The Pale Blue Eye is inspired by author Louis Bayard’s novel of the same name. Also, the first footage shows a set of supporting characters.

It includes Lucy Boynton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Toby Jones, Harry Lawtey, Simon McBurney, Gillian Anderson, Hadley Robinson, Timothy Spall, and Robert Duvall.

The Pale Blue Eye will premiere in some theaters this December 23 and on Netflix on January 6.
