We will see a meeting of the greatest frenemies in the world of superheroes.
Ryan Reynolds made a shocking revelation to Marvel fans on Tuesday – he just announced that Deadpool 3 will premiere on September 6, 2024. Hugh Jackman is also plunging into the film, returning from retirement to portray Wolverine – if you can remember, the adamantium-clawed mutant – in the sequel.
Reynolds dropped the bombshell with Jackman in the background in a clip posted to social media.
“Hey, Hugh. You wanna play Wolverine one more time?” Reynolds asked Jackman. To which Jackman replied, “Yeah. Sure, Ryan.” (Alexa, play “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston.)
“I want to take [a] minute to thank #StrangerThings for training me to keep my big mouth shut,” wrote Deadpool 3 filmmaker Shawn Levy on Twitter. “This news has been burning a hole in my lips for weeks now.”
Reynolds first appeared as Deadpool in 2019’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, starring Jackman. The two have joked in previous interactions and interviews about their involvement in that film and how this got a worldwide response from fans and it was a pretty recurring joke.
In 2017, Jackman retired as Wolverine with Logan after portraying the role numerous times throughout the X-Men franchise. However, hand it over to Reynolds and his fake conflict to bring him back into superhero clutches for another trip.
Jackman shared that he would be retiring from the Wolverine role on EW in 2017. In a conversation with celebrity friend Jerry Seinfeld about how he decided to leave Seinfeld after years of history, the comic recommended that Jackman leave something for him.
“The moment he said it, I was like, ‘This is it,’” Jackman stated at the time. “I’m quite indecisive, but when I get that gut feeling, it’s kind of a relief to me. When I met my wife, I knew. With the kids, I knew. When I was talking to Jerry that day, I was like, ‘Oh, yeah.’”

Jackman Journey Out of Retirement
But in July 2021, Jackman shared a cryptic picture of him with Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, which created a buzz among fans discussing whether he was just trolling, or they were meeting for Wolverine.
Besides their friendship and fake conflict, the actors have a common link: Levy.
Levy directed 2011’s Real Steel, which starred Jackman, and the two reunited for an interview with EW in 2021. Meanwhile, Levy also directed Free Guy and The Adam Project, which featured Reynolds.
Perhaps they had a great time working together as they teamed up for a third go with Deadpool 3. Notably, Jackman starred in a voice cameo role in Free Guy. The three, obviously, are often communicating.
“I’ve had to really search my soul on this one,” Reynolds sarcastically said in the clip he broke the news for Deadpool 3.
“His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character find new depth, new motivation, new meaning. Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside and I… have nothing. Yeah… Just completely empty up here and terrifying. But we did have one idea.”
