“Now is forever.” S7GMA unpacks the essence of what it means to be yourself on his new EP, “Mind of Me.” The project captures key aspects of the journey to honoring his truth. What’s more, he wrote, recorded, and produced his EP 100% on his own.

Growing up in a culture that viewed expressing feelings and vulnerability as a weakness, S7GMA spent years trying to meet others’ expectations, filling shoes, and being someone other than himself. After losing close friends and family, he realized that nothing—no future—is guaranteed, and he finally let it all out. Music became his platform to consciously reflect and honor himself, his experiences, and his story.

The EP opens with “Welcome,” a track that invites listeners into his journey with a storytelling piano melody. The lyrics, “welcome to the mind of me, this is from experience and memories inside of me” signify his welcoming of a new chapter and a conscious awakening.

When asked about the hardest part of putting out this music, S7GMA shares the immense guilt he felt while grieving the deaths of his best friend and, shortly thereafter, his father. He spent a lot of time dwelling on the “what ifs” of the series of events leading up to those life-altering moments. A crucial pivot in his healing process was finally writing and recording the third track on the EP, “SORRY,” which sheds light on the darkest part of life; loss.

During the interview, S7GMA’s courage in sharing his trauma provided insight and strength and demonstrated how art can be used as a tool for learning and overcoming challenges. While flaws are part of us, “you are not your flaws,” he states. This song subliminally challenges mental health stigmas and emphasizes that while pain may shape us, we are not defined by it.

These experiences drove him to create this EP project from start to finish, all on his own. Influenced early on by ’90s and 2000s hip-hop artists like Nas, Kid Cudi, and Logic, he developed his own melodic flow and trajectory into rap/hip-hop. Before creating his EP, he stopped listening to other artists and focused on cultivating his own sound from scratch; writing, producing, mixing, and mastering.

The final song, “Now,” brings the journey full circle. “It’s ok to be angry, it’s ok to be selfish,” he raps in the song “Now,” embracing the realization that he’s finally not afraid to be his honest self and lay it all on the table. Finally, S7GMA has a platform to truly express himself,  and be 100% in control, which he mentioned was his favorite part of making music.

Reflecting on the culmination of his songs and the EP project, he says this has reaffirmed how now is all you have, your future is now, you are now, and “now is forever.” And now is the time, in his words, “to bet on yourself.”
