This year’s fourth installment to the Thor franchise has been roaring with thunder, making it by far their biggest North American box office debut.
Thor: Love and Thunder, the newest Marvel movie released this weekend at No. 1 with $143 million dollars. It’s even more thunderous than its predecessor- Ragnarok (2017), which earned $122.7 million.
Thor opened in 2011 with $65.7 million and The Dark World followed suit two years later and gained $85.7 million. These movies gained international success, too: but Love and Thunder collected $302 million from overseas audiences alone.
Chris Hemworth reprised his role as Thor and reclaimed the heavens for Earth in this sequel to 2013’s Marvel Studios film. He reunited with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster among other characters including Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and villain Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher.

There is a massive twist as Jane bears the role of female Thor called Mighty Thor. Waititi has called the film as Thor’s “midlife crisis” movie.
“It’s not a serious film, and it’s not a drama, but we do deal with ideas that I think a lot of humans deal with – universal themes about love and loss and our place in the world,” he said in an interview with EW.
“Everyone sort of asks this question in the film: What is our purpose? What is the reason that you’re a hero, and what do you do when you have these powers? It’s sort of like a midlife crisis film, really.”
The filmmaker also stated that he intended to “freak” Marvel lovers out with the fourth installment’s love-themed aesthetic during EW’s Around the Table with the cast and crew.
“I was thinking, what would freak the fans out – and not in a good way?” Waititi stated.“You associate Thor [with being a] big hero. The last thing a Thor fan really wants to see is the word ‘love.’ They’re like, ugh, kissing! So, I was like, we’ll lean into that. We’ll make them love love and make the fans excited for a romance.”
