The Japanese actress discusses her latest leading role and bringing a story of loss, culture, and personal rediscovery to Hollywood.
Natsuki Kunimoto has built a screen career spanning Japanese cinema and international productions, with credits including 47 Ronin, The Terror and Nariyuki na Tamashii. Her work has brought her into stories that introduce Japanese characters and cultural perspectives to audiences worldwide.
In the 2013 film 47 Ronin, Kunimoto played Riku Oishi, alongside Keanu Reeves and Hiroyuki Sanada. She later portrayed Chiyo in the second season of The Terror, adding an international television production to her film experience.
Now, she leads director Gudni Gudnason’s Mysterious Pond, a film centered on a woman’s search for meaning after loss. With its Hollywood premiere approaching, the project gives audiences a chance to see Kunimoto at the heart of a story about grief, identity, and personal rediscovery.
Her character, having lost her parents and nearly lost her sense of self, begins to find a way forward through Japanese culture. For Kunimoto, the role’s emotional significance lies in that gradual transformation, following a woman as she discovers an “inner light” when her connection to herself has become uncertain.
The film also brings together the perspectives of its Japanese cast and Gudnason, whom Kunimoto describes as a director living within Japanese culture. She sees that combination as essential to the film’s approach, particularly in how it portrays traditions and teachings shaping a person’s everyday life.
Ahead of the premiere, Kunimoto shared her reflections on the role and the prospect of introducing the film to Hollywood audiences.
What did playing this character mean to you?
“It was a truly wonderful experience to follow the journey of a woman who, after losing her parents and nearly losing her own sense of self, discovered her inner light through Japanese culture.”
How do you feel about the film premiering in Hollywood?
“This film blends the perspectives of the Japanese cast with that of Director Gudni, who lives within Japanese culture. It sensitively portrays how the beauty and teachings of Japanese culture resonate with people’s hearts and lives, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing how Hollywood audiences will relate to this film and what they’ll take away from it.”
For Kunimoto, the Hollywood screening offers an opportunity to discover how this culturally specific story connects with a new audience. Her comments return to the relationship between tradition and personal experience, how a person’s connection to culture can help them rediscover who they are.
With Mysterious Pond, she brings that question to the screen through a woman finding her way forward after loss.
Mysterious Pond will celebrate its world premiere on October 3, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, as part of the Global Stage Hollywood Film Festival.
