Foo Fighters Introduces Josh Freese as New Drummer

The Foo Fighters have officially introduced their new drummer, Josh Freese, during their recent livestream event, “Foo Fighters: Preparing Music for Concerts.” The event, which was presented in black and white, previewed the band’s upcoming 11th studio album, But Here We Are, which is set to release on June 2.

This marks the first appearance of Freese as a member of the Foo Fighters, taking over the position from the late Taylor Hawkins, who passed away in March 2022.

Before delving into the specifics of Freese’s introduction, the following section first examines his background and expertise that make him suitable to succeed the deceased Taylor Hawkins.

Who Is Josh Freese?

Josh Freese is a well-experienced American drummer who has thrived in the music industry for more than thirty-five years. He has played with numerous bands, including The Vandals, Danny Elfman, 100 Gecs, and Devo.

He has also performed on tour with artists such as Weezer, Nine Inch Nails, and Sublime with Rome. Freese was a founding member of A Perfect Circle, which he joined in 2000.

He has played drums on a number of albums, including Evanescence’s Fallen, Michael Bublé’s Crazy Love, and New Radicals’ Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too.

Replacing Taylor Hawkins

Freese has some big shoes to fill, replacing Taylor Hawkins, who was a beloved member of the Foo Fighters. Hawkins joined the band in 1997, taking over from the band’s first drummer, William Goldsmith.

Hawkins was known for his blissful beat machine style and his California cool, which became an enduring part of the Foos’ live appeal. Freese will have a monumental task ahead following Hawkins, but his impressive resume suggests he is more than capable of handling the responsibility.

Preparing for Concerts

The recent livestream event, “Foo Fighters: Preparing Music for Concerts,” was a chance for fans to see the band’s new drummer in action. The intimate studio show featured the live debut of Josh Freese, who played alongside the Foo Fighters as they previewed songs from their upcoming album.

The livestream also included exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and more, all filmed at the band’s own 606 studios.

Other Possible Replacements Teased

Before announcing Freese as their new drummer, the Foo Fighters teased other possible replacements in a funny skit featuring appearances from Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee, and TOOL’s Danny Carey.

However, it was Freese who was ultimately chosen to take over the position.

But Here We Are

The upcoming album, But Here We Are, is the band’s first LP since Hawkins’ tragic death in March 2022. The album features the lead single, “Rescued,” and the recently dropped track, “Under You.”

The album package design, created by Brooklyn-based graphic arts studio Morning Breath Inc., is stark white-on-white and is dedicated to Hawkins and Dave Grohl’s late mother, Virginia, who also passed away in 2022. But Here We Are is due out on June 2 and is available for preorder now.

On the Road Again

The Foo Fighters hit the road on May 24 for their first dates since Hawkins’ death. Fans can expect to see the band performing with their new drummer, Josh Freese.

The band’s tour dates will be a chance for fans to see how Freese fits into the band and what his addition brings to the Foo Fighters’ live shows.

Conclusion

The Foo Fighters have chosen a talented and experienced drummer in Josh Freese to take over from the late Taylor Hawkins. While Freese has big shoes to fill, his impressive resume suggests he is more than capable of handling the responsibility.

Fans can look forward to seeing how Freese fits into the band and what his addition brings to their live shows. With their upcoming album, But Here We Are, set to release soon, the Foo Fighters are preparing to begin a thrilling new phase in their music career.
