Marvel Introduces Star-Studded Family of Immortals in Eternals Trailer

Source: Marvel

Marvel introduced a jaw-dropping trailer of its upcoming movie Eternals last Monday, and fans are nothing but overwhelmed with excitement. With Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao at the helm alongside seasoned actors that include Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek, the race of immortals is fast becoming the most anticipated characters to be introduced in film this 2021.

Angelina Jolie plays the warrior Thena, while Salma Hayek plays the Eternals spiritual leader Ajak. Starring alongside them is Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani (The Lovebirds) as Kingo, Lia McHugh (The Lodge) as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry (Godzilla vs. Kong) as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff (Sound of Mental) as Makkari, Don Lee (Train to Busan) as Gilgamesh, and Barry Keoghan (Calm with Horses) as Druig.

As the upcoming Marvel film is a star-studded project, it is almost hard to zero in on just one character and call him or her a favorite. With Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek on board, it would seem that everyone else will just be doing supporting roles. In reality, however, every character in the film is a critical part of the whole Eternals plot, and Gemma Chan is surely one character that Marvel fans need to watch out for. Judging from Kevin Feige’s recent interview, Gemma’s character was carefully picked as she plays a pivotal role in the film

“There were some characters that we changed from male to female, there were some characters that we knew how we were altering them from the books,” Feige told Variety in an interview. “But then also it came down to casting. So for Sersi, for instance — and if there was a lead in this ensemble, it is Sersi, it is Gemma Chan — we looked at and read all sorts of women for that part. And ended up really believing that Gemma was best for it. And thankfully, she’s proven that to be the case in the final movie. So, of course, Chloé was a big part of that decision and of every casting decision.”

Kit Harington, best known for his role as Jon Snow on HBO’s most popular series Game of Thrones, was also briefly shown in the film’s trailer. The British actor will play the character of Dane Whitman, also known as the Black Knight. Harington’s role in Eternals was revealed during the 2019 D23 Expo.

The Black Knight was first introduced to The Avengers #47 in December 1967. Historically, the original Black Knight was a Medieval-era knight who had a descendant known as Nathan Garrett. Garrett eventually became a supervillain. It was later revealed that Garrett was the uncle of Whitman. After an intense fight with Iron Man, Garrett passed on his gear and mystical sword to Whitman and urged him to honor the Black Knight name. If anything, Harington’s role in the film is another character fans should look out for.

The Eternals are the Earth’s protectors from humankind’s longest and fiercest enemies, the Deviants. Both the Eternals and the Deviants were created by the Celestials, a unique race of god-like beings who created the entire galaxy. For centuries, the immortal Eternals have protected and guided mankind while staying hidden. Much as they wanted to play behind the scenes, mankind could not help but worship them. They were forced out of hiding due to the events that took place during the Avengers: Endgame. Interestingly, Thena is known as the first cousin of Thanos.

Eternals is expected to be released in theaters worldwide in November.
