For Robert Ross, success has rarely arrived by the shortest route. The Canadian-born country singer-songwriter has traveled from the small towns of New Brunswick to military service overseas, from a new life in Australia to the studios of Nashville. Now, Ross is watching another chapter of that unlikely journey unfold as his single “For You Girl” continues making its presence felt on the MusicRow CountryBreakout Radio Chart.

The achievement carries particular significance for an independent artist whose career has been built steadily rather than overnight. “For You Girl” has climbed to No. 64 on the chart, giving Ross tangible evidence that the heartfelt country music he has spent years developing is connecting with programmers and listeners in one of the genre’s most competitive markets.

For Ross, it’s another milestone in a career that increasingly seems to embody the title of his debut album, It’s Never Too Late.

Long before Nashville entered the picture, Ross was growing up in New Brunswick, Canada, where his mother, Betty, introduced him to classic country music. Local dances and community gatherings reinforced that connection, surrounding him with songs built on direct storytelling, memorable melodies and emotions ordinary people could recognize in their own lives.

His path, however, would lead through the Canadian Army before it led to recording studios. Ross served for 11 and a half years, including three and a half years overseas. Those experiences brought discipline, perspective and a lifetime of stories that would eventually become part of the foundation of his music.

After moving to Australia in 2009 and becoming an Australian citizen in 2014, Ross began turning his musical ambitions into an international career. Drawing inspiration from Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Randy Travis and Sawyer Brown, he developed a sound that combines traditional country storytelling with contemporary production and flashes of rock-and-roll toughness.

His debut album produced a string of successful singles. “Jack Daniels” and “Driving Me Insane” reached No. 1 on Australian and international independent charts, while “Don’t You Cry” topped a world indie chart and earned a Single of the Year nomination at the Josie Music Awards. Ross has also collected international honors, including Male Artist of the Year recognition at the Red Carpet Awards in Holland.

Then came television.

Ross’s “Drink ’Em Down” earned a placement in the Season 3 premiere of Tulsa King, the hit series starring Sylvester Stallone. For an independent songwriter, the sync represented the kind of exposure that can introduce years of work to an entirely new audience. It also reinforced something Ross had been demonstrating throughout his career: his traditional-minded country music could travel well beyond the confines of any one market.

But “For You Girl” shows another side of the artist.

Co-written by Ross and Gil Grand, who also produced the recording, the song exchanges some of the rougher edges associated with “Drink ’Em Down” for an unabashedly romantic approach. Its narrator is completely overwhelmed by attraction, describing a woman capable of turning his entire world upside down.

The centerpiece is a chorus built around pursuit: “I’m running a race that I can’t win / To the ends of the earth and back again.” It is uncomplicated country songwriting in the best sense, direct, visual and immediately understandable. Rather than treating romantic vulnerability as something to disguise, Ross commits to it completely.

That sincerity is reinforced by an impressive Nashville studio lineup.

Recorded at Station West Nashville, “For You Girl” features Troy Lancaster on lead guitar, Joe Spivey on acoustic guitar, Matt King on drums, Dan Dugmore on pedal steel and Mike Rojas on piano. Rory Rositas handled engineering and mixing, with Josh Emmons providing engineering and tracking.

It is a formidable collection of musicians, yet the recording never feels like an exercise in showing off studio credentials. The players give the song exactly what it requires. Dugmore’s steel provides traditional country coloring, Lancaster supplies melodic muscle, and Rojas adds warmth around a vocal performance that remains firmly at the center.

That balance may help explain the song’s MusicRow momentum. “For You Girl” sounds polished enough to stand alongside contemporary Nashville releases without sanding away the characteristics that make Ross recognizable.

And recognition matters.

The MusicRow CountryBreakout Radio Chart has long provided an important measuring stick for independent artists seeking radio traction alongside established Nashville acts. Moving upward may appear incremental when viewed simply as two numbers, No. 66 to No. 64, but independent country careers are often constructed exactly this way: one station, one spin, one programmer and one new listener at a time.

For Ross, that gradual climb mirrors the larger trajectory of his life.

He didn’t begin with Nashville connections or a major-label machine. His road has stretched from New Brunswick through the Canadian military, across the world to Australia and eventually back across the Pacific to Music City, where he relocated in 2023 to pursue the next phase of his recording career with Grand.

The chart success of “For You Girl” therefore represents more than another résumé item. It is the latest validation of a career founded on persistence.

Ross has already experienced No. 1 records on independent charts, international awards, a major television sync and recognition in Nashville. Yet there remains something especially appropriate about seeing “For You Girl” inch its way upward at country radio. This is an artist whose entire story has been about continuing forward regardless of how long the road becomes.

Country music loves songs about chasing something just beyond reach.

With “For You Girl,” Robert Ross sings about exactly that.

And this time, the chase is taking him up the charts.
