Taking Al Back Home is a poignant and deeply personal documentary that chronicles the final road trip of actor and comedian Bill Kirchenbauer as he fulfills a promise to his father, decorated war hero Sgt. Major Alfred E. Kirchenbauer. This 2,700-mile journey takes viewers on an emotional and entertaining ride from Austin, Texas, to Hesperia, Michigan, where Al’s ashes are returned to their final resting place at the White River in his boyhood hometown. With a blend of humor, nostalgia, and reverence, the documentary celebrates the remarkable life of Al Kirchenbauer and the enduring bond between father and son.

A Journey to Honor a Hero

In Taking Al Back Home, Bill Kirchenbauer embarks on a cross-country odyssey to honor his father’s dying wish. Along the way, Bill visits locations and people that held significance to his father, sharing amusing anecdotes and heartfelt memories. From favorite watering holes to a VFW post in Muskegon, Michigan, the journey is a touching tribute to Al’s legacy. The documentary also highlights Al’s military career, including his service during World War II as part of the Army’s 32nd Infantry Division, famously known as “The Ghost Mountain Boys.”

The Ghost Mountain Boys and Al Kirchenbauer’s Legacy

Al Kirchenbauer’s story is one of heroism and resilience. In 1942, during the grueling New Guinea campaign, the 21-year-old soldier took command after his leader was killed. The 32nd Infantry Division’s mission was marked by a perilous 42-day trek over the 10,000-foot Owen Stanley Mountains, followed by intense battles in the jungle. Al was gravely injured but survived, earning recognition for his bravery. After 28 years of military service, he passed away in 1992 at age 71, succumbing to cancer caused by Agent Orange exposure during the Vietnam War.
