Submissions open between August 15th and October 31st

Tupelo Press is thrilled to announce the annual Helena Whitehill Book Award submission period. This distinguished honor, underwritten by Sally Whitehill in remembrance of her mother, Helena Whitehill, replaces the former Sunken Garden Chapbook Award. Eager contestants can submit their manuscripts from August 15th through October 31st, each year.

This year’s esteemed final judge is none other than Jane Wong. Jane recently released her memoir, Meet Me Tonight in Atlantic City from Tin House (2023). She’s penned two poetry collections and has been featured in reputable platforms such as The New York Times, American Poetry Review, and The Kenyon Review, among others. A Ph.D. holder in English from the University of Washington and an Associate Professor at Western Washington University, Wong continues to influence the literary world profoundly.

Cutter Streeby, Director of Marketing at Tupelo Press, enthusiastically declares, “Launching this literary prize package in honor of Helena Whitehill will allow Tupelo Press to maintain its position at the forefront of cutting-edge literature and to expand our selections to include creative nonfiction, memoir, essays, and hybrid works.”

The prize itself is not just a testament to excellence but also a lucrative opportunity. Winners receive $1,000, a publication by Tupelo Press, an official book launch, international distribution courtesy of the University of Chicago Press, and a week-long residency at Gentle House on the Olympic Peninsula.

Detailing the significance of the award, Sally Whitehill mentions, “My mother, Helena Whitehill, was passionate about words and poetry. Upholding the belief that creative expression is for all, she instilled this in our family. The Helena Whitehill Book Award’s anonymous submission process ensures we champion this very ideal. Partnering with Tupelo Press, I’ve found a way to commemorate my mother’s legacy and uplift other writers.”

Besides being an avid supporter of the literary arts, Sally Whitehill is an author and screenwriter in her own right. She holds an MFA from NYU and is presently pursuing her Ph.D. in Creative Writing at King’s College, London.

The Helena Whitehill Book Award, established in 2002, has received nation-wide recognition, attracting submissions judged by renowned poets. What sets this award apart is its openness to both poetry (chapbook or full-length) and creative non-fiction, without any page limit. Manuscripts undergo anonymous judgment, with all finalists being considered for publication.

Before submitting their manuscripts, entrants are kindly urged to review the complete guidelines provided on the Helena Whitehill Book Award website. These guidelines offer valuable insights into the submission process, including formatting requirements, eligibility criteria, and other essential details that will help ensure a smooth and successful submission.

This year’s Helena Whitehill Book Award represents a unique opportunity for writers to not only gain recognition but also to have their voices heard on a broader stage. For a chance to earn recognition, a generous cash prize, and an opportunity to be published by a leading press, don’t miss out on this year’s Helena Whitehill Book Award.
