The iconic TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood hosted Dances With Films 2022 on June 12 – and the short drama “Coffined at 15”  by Indian American Female Filmmaker Filmmaker Gayatri Kumar made a huge impact on attendees.  The film was inspired by Kumar’s conversation with a child bride in Afghanistan and, as a media release for the event pointed out, it “uncovers a new perspective on the topic in a country where very young girls are sold to be married,”and – more than just a movie – it is also intended to give “Afghan refugees a medium to rise against child marriage.”  

 The film is set in present day Afghanistan (though it was shot in Noida, India.)  Highlighting that   Afghanistan is one of the most dangerous places in the world for women, the short drama follows the story of a fifteen year old girl whose father puts her in a coffin to sell her to an old Taliban soldier.   

Among the celebrity guests at the prestigious Dances With Films event was industry leader E! founder Larry Namer who commented, “Coffined at 15 is a great example of how innovative young filmmakers are bringing some of the harsh realities of this world to the front of our consciousness.  I applaud the team behind this film for the way in they captured the horror of modern day Afghanistan for women and presented it in a way that seemed factual and not overly politicized.”

 With sensitive casting that includes actual Afghan refugees who had fled to Delhi, India after facing harassment and trauma”, the film is like nothing you have ever seen before, showcasing“real tears and fears from those who have been victims at the hands of the Taliban.”

The story behind the making of the film is as fascinating as what you see on the screen.  

The spark behind the casting was that unforgettable conversation the filmmaker had with the young Afghan girl – who said she wants to be an actor “but will probably end up becoming a housewife.”

Sonia Quraishi, who herself experienced trauma as a result of the Taliban “literally went door to door to cast the film.”   The crew reported that many of the refugees they spoke to feared getting involved with the film, and those who did participate “showed great bravery and wanted their people’s voices heard.” 

Using people who have real life experience with the country and the trauma its people have experienced over the last decades does more than just bring realism to the screen.  It also gives real life refugees “ownership and earnings over their own tears and stories, instead of having the profits go to professional actors.”

After six weeks of never-ending questioning and testimonies, the Fairfax County judges have released their ruling in Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard’s defamation trial.

The court had ruled in favor of Depp, finding that Heard willingly and maliciously lied when she published her op-ed about being a survivor of domestic violence in a 2018 issue of Washington Post. 

Johnny Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and another $5 million in punitive damages. Judge Penney Azcarate decreased the punitive damages to the statutory cap of Virginia of $350,000. 

The jury found that Heard had been defamed, so she was awarded $2 million for compensatory damages. 

Heard was in court when the verdict was announced, and her face showed that she was shaken by the court decision.

“The disappointment I feel today is beyond words,” she stated afterward. “I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband.” 

Meanwhile, Depp was not in court during the announcement. However, he stated that he was “truly humbled” by the ruling in a statement given to EW. 

“From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome. Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that,” he said. 

The previous couple bumped into each other at a 2011 film, The Rum Diary and tied the knot in 2015. And in 2016, Heard filed a divorce from Depp, acquiring a domestic violence restraining order against him and alleging him of physically and verbally hurting her during “violent and volatile” moments. 

Depp has repeatedly repulsed the accusations, saying that Heard was, in fact, the abuser in the relationship. 

“Truth is the only thing I’m interested in,” said the Pirates of the Caribbean star on the stand. “Lies will get you nowhere, but lies build upon lies and build upon lies.” 

Depp alleged Heard of attacking him, severing the tip of his finger, putting human feces on his side of the bed, and countless more. 

He stated that he “never struck” Heard, “nor have I struck any woman in my life.” 

Depp said before the court that he had lost “nothing less than everything” and that whatever the outcome, he had already “lost.” 

“When the allegations were made [and] rapidly circulating the globe, telling people that I was drunken, cocaine-fueled menace who beat women suddenly in my 50s… No matter the outcome of this trial, the second the allegations were made against me [and] turned into fodder for the media… I lost then,” Depp told the court last month.

When people hear of zombies in a movie or TV series, their existing knowledge instantly directs them to scary-looking characters that have returned from the dead to feast on living people’s brains. Looking at every other film about zombies, it starts from a single alpha zombie to a swarm of zombies, making them antagonists and obstacles to whatever the main character’s goals are. On the other hand, the movie “Army of The Dead” surprises viewers with unique details about zombies that the audience has never heard of but makes the movie just as interesting and exciting.

“Army of the Dead” is a 2021 zombie heist film directed and written by Zack Snyder, along with co-writers Shay Hatten and Joby Harold. The movie features an array of actors such as Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tig Notaro, Raúl Castillo, Huma Qureshi, and Garret Dillahunt. The main characters are a group of mercenaries who plan a heist in a famous casino in Las Vegas. The only problem is there is a zombie apocalypse in their way.

The movie had a $70-90 million budget and was filmed in New Jersey, New Mexico, Los Angeles, and Nevada. “Army of the Dead” was released in selected theaters in the United States on May 14th, 2021 and debuted on Netflix on May 21st. What makes this film different from the others is that it replicates the cliches with what people associate with zombies but also gives them new unique attributes that catch our attention and interest.

“Army of the Dead” successfully delivered expressing each character’s personality and intention in the story. The overall mood and theme that Zack Snyder is going for are perfectly executed. The setting is the city of Nevada, pretty much destroyed and turned into a barren wasteland of zombies where they made it their kingdom. The movie could not have been more perfectly shot, considering the accuracy of the setting and its intricate details. As well as the visual effects, it highly contributed to the tone and setting of the film. The storyline associates fast forward transitions where they show a stream of events with killer background music building up from scene to scene of important events to pay attention to.

Overall, the movie delivered suspense, a slight hint of humor, emotional backstories, and a lot of killing and action. The most surprising element of the film is how they entailed new aspects to how we would view a typical zombie in a movie. The movie’s ending is not how we would all expect it to be, given the last scene, with how everything did not fall into place. Indeed, there will be another upcoming movie to connect this film. Without a doubt, everyone will be on the lookout for what is next.

So for Sersi, for instance — and if there was a lead in this ensemble, it is Sersi, it is Gemma Chan — we looked at and read all sorts of women for that part. And ended up really believing that Gemma was best for it. And thankfully, she’s proven that to be the case in the final movie. So, of course, Chloé was a big part of that decision and of every casting decision.”

Kit Harington, best known for his role as Jon Snow on HBO’s most popular series Game of Thrones, was also briefly shown in the film’s trailer. The British actor will play the character of Dane Whitman, also known as the Black Knight. Harington’s role in Eternals was revealed during the 2019 D23 Expo. 

The Black Knight was first introduced to The Avengers #47 in December 1967. Historically, the original Black Knight was a Medieval-era knight who had a descendant known as Nathan Garrett. Garrett eventually became a supervillain. It was later revealed that Garrett was the uncle of Whitman. After an intense fight with Iron Man, Garrett passed on his gear and mystical sword to Whitman and urged him to honor the Black Knight name. If anything, Harington’s role in the film is another character fans should look out for. 

The Eternals are the Earth’s protectors from humankind’s longest and fiercest enemies, the Deviants. Both the Eternals and the Deviants were created by the Celestials, a unique race of god-like beings who created the entire galaxy. For centuries, the immortal Eternals have protected and guided mankind while staying hidden. Much as they wanted to play behind the scenes, mankind could not help but worship them. They were forced out of hiding due to the events that took place during the Avengers: Endgame. Interestingly, Thena is known as the first cousin of Thanos. 

Eternals is expected to be released in theaters worldwide in November.
